hazard lines

Led by the Environment Agency, the main drive of the project is to undertake co-ordinated and methodical control of Himalayan balsam, with different organisations taking responsibility for different areas in the catchment, and pooling resources to ensure their most effective use.

Control work is undertaken by staff, contractors, volunteers and, significantly over the last four years, by the National Probation Service. Community volunteers are undertaking an increasing amount of work.We are undertaking experimental spraying of Skunk cabbage at a number of sites, and attempting to eradicate a recently established Crassula population, although we are not tackling the large infestations in the major lakes. Experimental trapping and removal of signal crayfish has been undertaken on the one known population in the catchment in an attempt to limit its expansion.
