Electrofishing

Electro fishing is a very efficient way of catching fish in order to assess the health, abundance, density and species of fish populations.

i-caught-oneIt uses electricity to temporarily stun fish which are drawn to the electrode before being scooped up into a net and into a bucket by the side of the water. When performed correctly, electro-fishing results in no permanent harm to fish which return to their natural state as soon as the electrode is switched off.

At South Cumbria Rivers Trust, electro-fishing has played a very important role in helping us to identify waters in need of attention and long term data helps to determine population trends.
